Applications for 2011 are now closed.
New Play Clinic is an initiative to support the dramaturgical development of new dramatic theatre for the Irish stage. This scheme is a formal expansion of the dramaturgical services Fishamble already provides on an ongoing basis to writers and artists around Ireland. The objective of the Clinic is to help maximise the potential of plays for production in Ireland, through practical dramaturgical support. The New Play Clinic is supported by the Arts Council’s Theatre Development Funding Scheme.

WHAT IS ON OFFER?
Fishamble seeks to work flexibly with selected artists in the way most suited to develop their new work for production. Support through the scheme is likely to include Fishamble hosting a 1-3 day workshop to aid script development for a new work, and payment of key artistic contributors (for example writer, director, actors) for that workshop period, and the provision of dramaturgical support. The Company will also offer ongoing support for the project. The artists selected may request the input of Jim Culleton (Artistic Director) and/or Gavin Kostick (Literary Manager), or they may wish to collaborate with a director/dramaturg of their own choice. Similarly, they can seek Fishamble’s guidance in casting actors, or provide performers already connected to the project. After the workshop, ongoing formal/informal feedback and support is offered. It is envisaged that this workshop/developmental work will take place six to two months before intended production.
New Play Clinic is free of charge. Participants selected and who are based outside Dublin cover the cost of their travel/accommodation to Dublin, if such travel is necessary.
WHO IS IT AIMED AT?
- Individual playwrights (or collaborators) who are writing a play for which a production is scheduled
- Professional performance companies that are developing new work to production
- Presenting organisations that are programming new works and are actively engaged with their development for production
- The definition of ‘new play’ is quite broad: it can be anything from an authored script to dance theatre to varieties of post-dramatic work
NEW PLAY CLINIC IS NOT INTENDED FOR:
- New plays in development for presentation outside Ireland
- Projects for which there is no production yet planned
- Companies/organisations that already have dramaturgical or similar resources
- To replace rehearsal, provide non-dramaturgical support for production, or in any way to off-set costs or replace other necessary parts of the production
HOW TO APPLY
Interested artists/organisations who meet the above criteria can apply by submitting a statement of interest by email to info@fishamble.com by the deadline , with ‘New Play Clinic’ in the subject line.
This statement of interest should briefly include:
- The nature of the project, including its current status (200 words)
- The timeline of development and intention for presentation, including any confirmed commitments to produce (100 words)
- A statement on the current status of the play, with a sample of up to 6 pages of script/ treatment/ source material or similar attached
- What would be gained from engaging with Fishamble in this process, and how New Play Clinic would best serve the artists involved (100 words)
- A brief biography (which may include clickable links) of the key people/organisations involved
- A budget overview for the production, outlining how much of the projected income is confirmed or unconfirmed. (Small excel sheet or similar, one page maximum)
- Are you in receipt of Arts Council or other funding e.g. local authority and, if so, under which scheme
Please keep the statement of interest clear, concise and free from jargon. Fishamble really wants to know the story of the project so far, who you are, what you’re up to and how the scheme can be of most use.
Applicants will be notified by a set date about whether their project has been accepted for the scheme.
OTHER THINGS TO NOTE
Public acknowledgement of the process is required at the production stage. Fishamble suggests: “Play development has been supported by Fishamble: The New Play Company’s New Play Clinic Scheme”, plus Fishamble logo. This will be discussed depending on the nature of printed/online material.
