Bringing Fishamble’s ON BLUEBERRY HILL by Sebastian Barry to Mountjoy Prison

Bringing Fishamble's ON BLUEBERRY HILL by Sebastian Barry to Mountjoy Prison

On Tuesday 24th October, Fishamble was invited to Mountjoy Prison to perform On Blueberry Hill for prisoners. Director Jim Culleton shares his thoughts after the performance. At Fishamble, we are always keen to tour our productions to audiences that we hope will connect with the plays, and are committed to creating access to our work for everyone.  We love working with venues around the country, and are visiting approximately 60 venues this year, so our productions reach as wide an audience as possible.  So, when we were chatting with June Edwards and Anne Costelloe in the education centre at Mountjoy prison, […]

ON BLUEBERRY HILL Profiles: Set & Costume Designer Sabine Dargent

ON BLUEBERRY HILL Profiles: Set & Costume Designer Sabine Dargent

Designing for On Blueberry Hill, by Sabine Dargent   Set and costumes The set of “On Blueberry Hill” is made of two elements which are pulling each other: – First of all, central, over-dimensioned is the bunkbed, intimate space of death and love. The reality of jail. – Then, as if echoing forever the words coming from the bed, an infinity of papers losing themselves in darkness. Such as a forest of words, of memories, of thoughts, of dreams. The bed and the costumes are stern and very textured, with so much life inside them, but very very simple to keep […]

ON BLUEBERRY HILL profiles: Sound Designer Denis Clohessy

The first time I worked with Fishamble was as the composer for Sebastian Barry’s ‘The Pride of Parnell Street’ as part of the Dublin Theatre Festival in 2007. Ten years on and I’ve had the pleasure of continuing that relationship with Fishamble on some great productions, including the Olivier Award winning show ‘Silent’ by Pat Kinevane. Its a great pleasure to return to Sebastian’s work with the same design team that helped create ‘The Pride’: Sabine D’Argent, our set designer, Mark Galione, the lighting designer and, of course, director Jim Culleton. ‘On Blueberry Hill’ is a powerful piece. The beautiful […]

An interview with David Ganly and Niall Buggy before the preview of ON BLUEBERRY HILL by Sebastian Barry

An interview with David Ganly and Niall Buggy before the preview of ON BLUEBERRY HILL by Sebastian Barry

As Fishamble wraps up rehearsals for On Blueberry Hill by Sebastian Barry, we ask actors David Ganly and Niall Buggy to talk about their characters, Sebastian Barry’s writing, and how they feel before the first preview. Interview by Chandrika Narayanan-Mohan   Tell us a bit about the characters you play in On Blueberry Hill. David Ganly I play a character called PJ who we discover in a cell in Mountjoy, and who basically is here to tell you the reason why he’s here. He’s got an unlikely cellmate. The play is about what happens to the two of them. Niall […]

Mentoring Partnership with Belltable, Limerick

Mentoring Partnership with Belltable, Limerick

Fishamble values its many partnerships with venues throughout Ireland very highly.  It has always enjoyed collaborating with Belltable and Lime Tree Theatre in Limerick, touring productions there on a regular basis and, in 2014, working closely together to premiere Fishamble’s Underneath by Pat Kinevane as part of Limerick City of Culture. I am delighted that Fishamble and Belltable will work together in a different way during 2016/17, when we present a year-long mentoring programme for playwrights and directors at Belltable.  Fishamble has previously presented similar programmes in partnership with Riverbank Arts Centre, Draíocht, The Mill, the Pavilion and the Source Arts […]

Interlopers, Intervention, and International Impact – by Chris Andrae

Interlopers, Intervention, and International Impact - by Chris Andrae

As the ‘unofficial’ American representative (Assistant Director) for Fishamble’s Tiny Plays for Ireland and America, I had the thrilling task of exploring stories told by Irish playwrights (for an Irish audience) several years after their first production. Touting a word count double that of War & Peace, Fishamble has narrowed the submitted tiny plays down to a published 50 (25 presented in 2012 and 25 presented in 2013). 20 are being taken to America as part of Ireland100. Fishamble’s initial 50 are immediate, relevant, and captivating; the company’s voice is clear in the massive editing process this work has undergone since […]

SWING on the Road…

SWING on the Road...

Diary entry by Gene Rooney, currently on tour with Fishamble’s SWING in Australia Time is doing mad things altogether.  I feel like we have been on the road forever, and yet it is still going too fast! We’ve been in Oz for just 2 weeks now and so far, so very lovely. First stop… Wollongong, was very special. We were given a great welcome by everyone. They had more or less sold out by the time we arrived so they were predisposed to liking us!! The audiences were lovely. We loved them. Every seat had one of their bums in….what’s […]

10th Anniversary of FORGOTTEN

10th Anniversary of FORGOTTEN

10 Years of Forgotten… It is a great source of pride (and some shock) to us that the performance of Fishamble’s Forgotten by Pat Kinevane this weekend in Dingle will mark the 10th anniversary, almost to the day, of its first performance. Almost a decade ago, we began our journey with Pat’s remarkable play about four elderly people living in retirement homes. Since then, the production has toured to over 60 venues in Ireland, as well as throughout Europe and the US. It has been joined by two other solo plays by Pat, Silent (since 2011) and Underneath (since 2014) […]

A Good News Week!

What a week! This week is the second in our run of Inside the GPO by Colin Murphy.  It is so exciting to see the main hall of the GPO full to capacity every night, and to witness audiences enjoying the experience so much.  The only disappointment is that we are not able to accommodate the number of people requesting tickets, as the demand for seats is so high.  It is so impressive to watch the team of over 40 people working on this production, as they transform the GPO into a theatre every evening once the post office shuts […]

Fishamble: Playwriting Courses

At the first day of rehearsals for Inside the GPO I idly remarked to one of my actor colleagues that life, appalling as it generally is, wasn’t too bad today as we had set off to work in theatre some 30 years ago and now we were still involved and looking at being part of creating a great new work for the GPO itself at Easter, 100 years after the Rising. Colin Murphy – who is a young, fit and dynamic sort – surprised me by adding that he thought we might go back over half that distance as he had […]
